Abstract:
Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy is commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and other industries because of its exceptional high-temperature performance. However, the poor machinability of the alloy necessitate the adoption of laser cladding technology for surface modification and damage repair of IN718 parts. The thermal stress induced by the rapid heating and cooling characteristic of laser cladding is accumulated within the cladding layer, which leads to the initiation of cladding layer cracks. It, in turn, adversely affects the mechanical properties of the parts. Therefore, reducing cladding layer cracks has become a popular research topic in the field of laser cladding crack control in recent years. The research progress on controlling cladding layer cracks in IN718 was reviewed, both domestically and internationally. It outlined the factors that influence the forming quality of IN718 cladding layer, discussed the strengthening mechanisms of IN718, and focused on the mechanisms of crack generation and propagation in IN718 cladding layers. Recent advances in crack control techniques for IN718 cladding layers were examined, and the development trends of IN718 cladding layer crack-control technology were summaried and looked forward.
